epa08249713 Group of animal rights activists hold placards during an animal rights campaign protest in Colombo, Sri Lanka, 26 February 2020. Local as well as foreign animal lovers, some along with their pets, urging that the animal welfare act be passed by parliament, held a silent protest at the Vihara Maha Devi Park in Colombo. The Animal Welfare Bill was originally drafted in 2006 but has never been enacted despite continued public support over the years. With several violent acts against animals reported recently, like killing or seriously injuring dogs and cats, wild elephants and also domesticating wild elephant calves, animal rights activists have begun urging the government to enact the proposed bill.
